Group Classes Vs Individual Lessons

Our core business revolves around turning non-riders into confident riders. This is best done with individual lessons as the student needs 100% of the instructor’s attention particularly when they are feeling anxious. We offer this service all year round, running every weekend and holidays for kids and most days for adults by appointment.

Group Classes

Group classes are more suited to students who can already ride but just need to brush up on their skills. They are better for large groups that already exist. For example, a school or a youth group of 30 students might grade the kids by ability into three groups of ten with each group utilising two instructors.

That said, even when grouped by ability, some kids will pick it up quicker than others which spreads the instructors thin to make sure that everyone is covered.

Students who are the most anxious are typically the best at hiding in the group, and end up not getting the attention they need.

Group classes are more suited to giving every kid a “taste” for riding. Eg as an activity during bike week.

We don’t recommend the group class model when the goal is to teach kids to ride. It appears cheaper at first glance, but is deceptively expensive and consumes a lot of time for both the parents and students. Expect six 45 minute lessons at around $30 each to get the basics, then another six lessons to be riding confidently. Twelve lessons ends up costing $360 and 9 hours of your time.

Individual Lessons

Individual lessons allow the instructor to earn the student’s trust while getting them to do the easy stuff. The instructor is using this time to analyse what is limiting the budding rider and will address their specific limitation rather than addressing typical limitations.

The accelerated learning that comes from one-on-one lessons brings confidence in a shorter time frame allowing them to remain engaged for longer. For the most part, kids are throwing away training wheels and riding confidently within three 1 hour lessons. -That said, every kid is different there is a small percentage that are confidently up and running in two lessons, while others might need an extra lesson.
